Ralph Richardson (1845-1933) was born in Edinburgh, the son of James Richardson FRSE and Alison Ponton Black (daughter of Edinburgh Lord Provost Adam Black). His early education was at Edinburgh High School, then Edinburgh Academy. He studied in Dresden, the University of Edinburgh and the Collège de France in Paris. James Geikie ( 1839-1915 ) was the leading British authority on Pleistocene geology. He developed the theory, through observations in Scotland and Continental Europe, that during ice-ages mild inter-glacial periods interrupted the glacial period as a whole.
